(Charadrius placidus)
This bird is very similar to Little ringed Plover, but is larger and has a narrow white wing bar. This plover stays in middle stream of the river, and prefers stony riverbed, and does not go down to estuary or tidal flat. The living range is mainly low land, and does not reach mountainous areas. This bird sometimes visits artificially cleared ground, such as stockyard for various construction sites. Long distance migration is not known in Japan. The breeding starts in very early spring. The chicks sometimes found in mid-March, and are precocious and well camouflaged on stony riverbed. Outside the breeding season, this plover spends in a small flock on the riverbed.
